Beginning in 2003, people who are self employed are now able to deduct 100
percent of the health insurance premiums they pay. This is
mainly the work of the National Association for the Self-Employed, an
organization who has lobbied for this for years.
Obviously health insurance is a problem for many Americans, and small business
owners are no exception. The NASE released a national survey in July 2002 that showed
that 7 in 10 micro-business owners do not have health coverage for themselves or
offer insurance to eligible employees, citing affordability as the number one
reason.
The "Affordability in Health Care: Trends in American Micro-Business"
survey also revealed that for those who did have coverage, their monthly health
insurance premiums increased 13 percent in the past year, forcing them to spend
an average of 6.5 percent of their annual sales revenue on health insurance.
According to Census data, of the 43 million uninsured in the U.S., 60 percent of
them are "working uninsured" with themselves or the family head employed by a
small business. An employee in a firm with less than 10 employees pays 18
percent more for health insurance than a worker in a firm with 200 or more
employees, and costs are continuing to rise for small businesses.
Some states are doing their part to help: for example, New York Governor George
E. Pataki recently signed into law a bill that will make more affordable health
insurance available to small businesses run across New York State that are owned
and operated by single-person businesses (sole proprietorships).
