What is attitude? "He's got such a negative attitude." "What's with the
attitude?" "She needs an attitude adjustment."
So often we think of "attitude" in the negative sense. The Merriam-Webster
Dictionary defines attitude as, "a mental position or feeling with regard to a
fact or state." An attitude is simply a mental position or feeling it can be
negative, positive, or anything in between. So why not make the decision to have
your "mental position" be positive?
Sure, it's easy to let things get to you. Everything from housework to
traffic jams to waiting in line at the post office can be enough to make you
gripe, complain, or even yell. Maybe you don't actually say anything out loud
but your mind is still muddled with dark clouds of annoyance. Why didn't you
take the other road?
Why are there only three clerks at the post office? Why doesn't someone else do
the dishes around here?
Try to switch around your thinking so that every experience is a potentially
positive one. Change certain small elements of your life, and previous
"negative" situations might now be positive. How can you do that? Keep
books-on-tape and notebooks in your car inspiration could hit right in the
middle of a traffic jam! Anticipate long lines by scheduling extra time in your
day and bringing along a book or notebook. Buy a mini TV/VCR combo and put it in
the kitchen so you can catch up on your favorite TV shows.
The other day I needed to clean up a paper mishap I had in the living room. Yes,
it could have been a pain I could have complained that not only was I a klutz
for making a mess, but now I also had to clean it up, and who has time when I
have a million other things to do. Instead, I thought, "OK, this happened. But
now I get to use my super-cool lavender Dust Buster (that I got on sale
at Kmart, thank you very much) that I haven't had a chance to use yet." I turned
it on and actually had fun busting my dust and I felt a sense of
accomplishment when every last piece of paper had disappeared.

Motivational speaker Anthony Robbins recommends that instead of saying, "I have
to...", instead say "I get to..." What a change in attitude this one phrase can
make! If you're dreading making follow-up phone calls, or filling orders, or
answering emails, try just switching the sentence around. "I get to make phone
calls to potential clients, customers, or recruits! I have the chance of helping
them make their lives better!" "I get to fill orders and send supplies to people
who are crazy about scrapbooking!" "I get to answer emails and keep in
correspondence with family, friends, and
customers!"
Think it in your mind. Say it out loud to yourself. Say it out loud
to your family, friends, and co-workers. They won't think you're crazy they'll
probably be inspired to change their own way of thinking!
With the right attitude, anything and everything is possible. Now, if you'll
excuse me, I've got some more Dust Bustin' to do...
